Does Food Packaging Impact Nutritional Quality of Food?

We come across plastic packaging every day. Whether it’s our food, parcel, or any other delivery, it is mostly wrapped in plastic. It has become an indispensable part of our life, and the packaging industry is the main reason for it.

However, the problem does not lie in plastic. It’s the polymer molecules present in it that not only harms the environment but affects our health also. Two types of plastic are of rising concern in the food packaging industry. It includes:

  1. Polycarbonate is used to make food containers, eye lenses, CDs, etc. The BPA chemical present in it can put human & animal life at risk.
  2. PVC is used in plastic bottles, cling wraps, screw caps, etc. The chemicals used in PVC to make it soft can be toxic and can increase the risk of cancer, liver damage, etc.

Although, there is no concrete evidence that plastic packaging affects the food’s nutritional quality, there are some types of plastic packaging that put our health at risk. For example, meat, cheese, fruits, vegetables are directly wrapped in plastic sheets, which can give birth to various deficiencies, affect the immune system, influence hormonal levels, and hinders the proper growth and development of children.

To protect our food from plastic microbeads, try to limit the use of plastic packets in daily life. Instead of using plastic containers & bottles to store or deliver food, water, use silverware & steel water bottles.

Also, we should try to order lesser takeout meals. It will help to stay healthy and reduce the use of plastic in food packaging.

Taking care of the nutritional quality of food is in our hands. Whether it’s packaging or not, we cannot put our health at risk. Hence, take care of your nutritional health by avoiding plastic packaging.
