World Ocean Day, 2021; The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods

Every year World Ocean Day is celebrated on June 8th by United Nations to aware the general public of the impact of their activities on oceans across the globe. This year UN wants to acknowledge how oceans support the life, humanity, and livelihood of every organism of the Earth.

As per UNEP, 70% of the planet is covered with oceans, promoting life on the Earth. Oceans provide 50% of plant oxygen, soaks 30% of carbon dioxide that slow global warming, is home to most of Earth’s biodiversity. Seafood is also a source of protein for millions worldwide. It is estimated to provide 40 million jobs by 2030 in ocean-based industry, which plays a significant role in boosting a country’s economy.

But with rapid industrialization, the quality of oceans is depleting. We are extracting more from the oceans than we can return. 90% of the big fishes are depleting, 50% of coral reefs are damaged, and let’s not forget the pollution, oil leaks, sewage, and garbage laying on the beaches, impacting the oceans hazardously.

The need for immediate actions is vital if we want to protect the oceans and habitat, whether mainlander or marine. To protect the oceans, the UN has declared on their website about the launch of a decade-long plan to overcome challenges and achieve sustainable goals through “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources” by 2030.

United Nations is also organizing its second entirely virtual event to celebrate World Ocean Day, where this year’s theme Th Ocean: Life and Livelihoods, will be highlighted. The program is arranged in partnership with the non-profit organization Oceanic Global, where thought leaders, institutes, communities, celebrities, biodiversity, and economic experts voice their thoughts.

Along with global movements, we as citizens can also help to sustain oceans with few changes in our life:

  • Buy sustainable seafood

Always consider buying fishes or other seafood certified by MSC fisheries standards. This council works on the requirements for sustainable fishing.

  • Practice safe boating

While boating, remember to anchor the boat far off from coral reefs not to disturb and destroy them.

  • Be careful while fishing

Treat the marine habitats with care and follow “catch & release” to keep more fishes alive.

  • Stay updated and keep volunteering

Keep yourself updated with new ways for incorporating sustainability and also teach others about it. You can also volunteer to clean the beaches.

Oceans and marine life are the lungs of our planet Earth and are an essential part of the biosphere. It is high time for us to start looking out for the oceans and return the favors. Hence, this year let’s pledge to protect and support the oceans in any way we can to sustain a healthy big blue future.
